Default I have questions for an engine builder

I'm assembling a new 350 gm short block with all new parts so I don't have a disassembled engine to go by. Does a gasket go between the oil pump and block, I wouldn't think there would just be the two bare mating surfaces. Is there supposed to be any kind of guide or bushing used with the oil pump shaft extension. None of these items came with the new pump or shaft. Also the oil filter "housing" on the block does not have the threaded nipple in it to screw on the oil filter. What is the proper name for this nipple. The Chevy parts dept. always asks if I have a part number when I ask these kind of questions because they are not interested in researching anything. Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

No gasket metal to metal at factory. I noticed Jeg's had a copper gasket avalible for a SBC oil pump, if the factory didn't do it, I wouldn't try to re-engineer it. The pick up tube should be spot welded or secured with one of the mechanical locks being sold for that purpose.

You should take care and make sure your oil pump mounting bolt dosen't bottom out in the main cap, years ago one of my good freinds cracked the main cap of his 302 Chevy because the bolt was too long. Thread the bolt all the way on and put the pump body along side it and make sure the bolt is at least an 1/8" or more shorter than that mounting heigth. I always use a ARP stud in this position because of my friend's bad luck way back in 1978 (with a stud there is no worry.)

Hope this helps you out

Thanks for the good info. Any thoughts on the oil filter nipple or the oil pump shaft extension guides or bushings. btw , it's a hi volume pump and a steel shaft, not nylon.

Would the nipple be called an oil filter adaptor?

I believe it is.

And there is a sleeve between the oil pump shaft and the extension. Make sure to get the steel sleve, not plastic.

I use a billet fiter adapter sold by Canton racing. You have to be careful and warm up motor before revving if you want the filter to live. Years ago I had a OEM filter adapter crack on my Z/28 Camaro probably because I overtightened the oil filter during a oil change. I have always blocked off the by-pass valve in the adapters with a NPT plug. I think the Canton parts are manditory on a high performance motor and even have one on my wife's "stocker LT-1".

I only use K&N or AMSOL oil filters on my motors.
