I have an 82 Vette (crossfire injection) and am getting a vibration when I hit 60-65 MPH was wondering where to check first. Engine or Tranny? If I shift from Drive to 3rd it seems to help, which leads me to think its a transmission issue, although, the engine sounds like its either an air/fuel mixture issue or possible a dead cylinder? I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thanks
When you get it up to 60-65 try putting it into neutral to see if noise goes away or gets louder. You could also jack the rear tires off the ground and run it at 60-65 to see what this does with the noise. It could also eliminate or condemn the noise to the front end. Just a couple things to try.

Just to add to the "Cat Gunners" above suggestions:
In my experience, a vibration at 60 mph is usually from wheels out of balance, or a drive shaft out of balance.
Try the shift to neutral at 65 mph first. If the vibs go away, its drive related. If they stay the same- look at the tires/wheel balance.

Running the drive train on a Vette with the wheels off the ground is not a good idea.
Had a similar problem but it was not at a specific speed...it was a bad harmonic balancer. with the car off, look at the balancer and see if it has separated. my car would shake at random speeds.
take of your engine belts and give it a run at a safe place to 65 and see if your vibe is still there. this will eliminate all your engine accessories, ac,power steer, alternator and water pump. ....fair chance it may be one of these, especially power steer.

I agree. I've got a neighbor that means well that offered to help me....but quite frankly the thought scares the you know what out of me. In addition, the only way to really do this correctly is to have the rear end in the loaded position.
I'm thinking heavily about taking the car to a licensed dyno shop in town where it can be strapped down safely. I'm not looking for horsepower, I just thought that having the car in gear and loaded with the rear wheels spinning at highway speeds might offer me the opportunity to walk around see what is happening.
Now I realize that if the probably is in the front suspension this will tell me nothing. But in effect I suppose it still will. However I'm 90% sure that my vibration at 60-65mph is in the rear end.
I'm also going to take my car to a tire store that shaves tires. They've been balanced and I've got a few friends that have 4x4s and swear by this as a means to eliminate vibration of large tires on balanced wheels.
