Default Auto to TKO conversion questions:

I have finally started my auto to TKO600 conversion. Yesterday I worked on getting the automatic pedal box out of the car. That was fun! NOT!

For those that have already done this, I have a couple of questions:

1) What did you do about the transmission-steering column interlock? I am assuming I just need to make sure the lever on the steering column is secured in the correct position somehow.

2) What did you do about the large hole left in the body that the manual seal doesn't cover when the automatic shifter and seal is removed? Just fabricate a cover from some sheetmetal?

3) What did you do about the neutral safety switch?

I am dissapointed that the kits don't include these items, considering how much they cost!!!!!

My TKO install was on a 4-speed car. I initially wired the interlock in the open position using SS wire. Later I used threaded rod, welded an eye on the end and using washers/nuts positioned the rod to hold the cable in the open position.

I am going to make some kind of bracket to mechanicaly hold it in place. I don't want to use wire or a tie wrap becuase I wouldn't want it to come loose while driving. For the price of these kits, they should have included something for this.

Anyone have any pics of what they did about the shifter hole issue?

I didn't have to make a patch, just altered the hole a bit.

This pic was before going to a 700R4

This was to a 4 speed from the 700 - same hole used for the TKO 500.

Anyway, I'm not sure if that's what you were after, but that how it went for me.

Thanks for posting the pics.

It's obvious from your pics that the shifter area is different on the later C3s. With my auto shifter and the rubber boot below it removed, there is a large hole in the body, and the rubber boot for the manual shifter only covers about 60% of the hole!

I bent aluminum and pop rivited it in place.

I don't use clutch or N safety switches. what if you need to start the car when moving or move the car with the starter?

i'm not sure what a steering interlock is?

1. on my 69 i didn,t need the cable going to the trany that lets you only remove the key when the tranny is in park--on my 78 i did as you stated and made sure it was unlocked.

2. didnt have a large hole in either car--my shifter came through the hole and was covered by a rubber boot.

3. neutral safety switch Ordered the 4 speed switch from Corvette Central #592104 and #663169(you must mount the switch to the clutch pedal before mounting the pedals) ran the wiring from the neutral saft switch up to the new switch. for info only i originally installed it without the safety switch and just had it shorted -my wife took the vet for a drive and i had to replace the drivers front fender after she attempted to start the car without it being out of gear -it leaped forward into a steel pole in front of the store
