I have a new to me 68 with what looks to be nearly new 4 inch hooker sidepies. The previous has installed what looks to be hooker mufflers inerts. I am trying to remove the inserts to put in something else. I removed the side pipes from the collectors with little issue. Now I cant get the inserts to come out on the first one I tried. I got it out until about 10 " still left in the side pipe. It spins completely around and even goes back in but its like it hit something inside. The outside pipe is nice and round so its not that. I sprayed in oil and and tapping hard with a hammer. Am i missing something like are they keyed to come out a certain way or ??
There is no key, they just slide in/out. I ran into the same thing with mine. Somehow, a big blister appeared inside the pipe at about where the rear mounting flang is welded on. I have no idea how this happens. I bought these pipes new and it wasn't there to start with. I was lucky as I had STS Spiral Baffles installed and was able to "screw" them out past the blister. Not much help.
I dropped a chain in my pipes, attached a couple large washers and wrapped the chain to a post. grab onto the side pipe and jerk until the damn things come out
