Ok, so I'm cleaning up under the hood right now. And I'm right into a major engine clean up. I have the heads (stock smog L48 crap) on the bench and just tonight decided that before I put 'em back on, I think I should put in a set of valve seals.
Now my question is, do I call GM for these seals and will they need the number off my heads or what? Will I get them from any parts store?
These heads cleaned up nice but they may only be used another year or 2 because I'm gonna bump a nice set on next time. These will be fine until then.
If you know any part numbers I'd be so glad if you shared 'em with me!
Thanks gang!
Two weeks ago, I installed a set of Felpro stock style valve stem seals on my '80. The Felpro number is "SS 5112" Also says 16-5112 on the box for "16" seals. Put over 1,000mi since install and so far so good :yesnod:
GM will simply look up the part number for you and sell you O-rings. That is how they came from the factory. As Paul B. has mentioned, there are better non-OEM products out there such as these from Crane Cams.
I just did the seals on my '81 this weekend using fel pro 'O' ring & umbrella type seals. If you need the part numbers, I could dig the boxes out of the bin & check them :)
