Default How do you install the crankshaft gear?

I am doing a cam change.

What is the most cost effective way to install the crankshaft timing gear? I can probably rent a gear puller from autozone to remove the old one.

However, I do not know how or what tools are needed to install the new gear correctly. The last time I bought a timing chain set it was installed at a machine shop. I have never done it myself. Thanks for any advice.

Put the gear in the oven at 350* for 30 minutes. While it's in there find a piece of pipe that fits over the snout on the crank. Seat the key in the crank, grab the gear out of the oven, line it up with the key and swat it with the pipe.

That does appeal to my cost effective side...

Is it safe though? I worry about smacking the front of the crank and what if any collateral damage I could do. (I like the idea)

put the key in place. Line the dots on the gears put the chain on them holding all together slip them on inplace. you will have to tap the crank pulley until it stops with a large socket.them your vibration dampner. 60 lbs torque

I am going to try the harmonic balancer installer and a PVC fitting to compress it on. Perhaps a little heat as well.

Thanks

Moroso makes a well designed tool for pressing the harmonic damper that will also work for the timing gear if you get a short length of pipe. I've been doing it this way for several years and it works perfectly without any risk of damaging your thrust bearing, bending the crankshaft, or any other potential damage.

Moroso's part number for the SBC one is 61740.

With the gear hot, there is very little hammering. Just some taps to seat it. Work fast- the room temp crank will suck the heat out of the gear RIGHT NOW.

A big socket (3/4" drive) will draw it on using the bolt and washer that will eventually hold the balancer on.

Just be careful when installing your timing gears...most parts makers will tell you to align your dots at 6 and 12....this is where the misconception occurs...most of us think that means that we set our distributor to this configuration YOU DONT ...the didn't lie or try to steer you wrong, they are saying the most accurate watt to line up the gears is at 6 and 12 because its easier to line up 2 dots when they are a half inch apart rather than 6 inches apart...its easy to make the mistake I know I did...if you also made the mistake just find no 1 tdc then make 1 more complete rotation then set no 1..that lines yur can/crank at 12 and 12 or if you don't care just rotate 180 to no 6 cyl

12 year old post... however since it was resuscitated: play a propane torch over the crank gear for a few minutes (or place in a 300°F oven for 20 mins) to expand the center. It will easily slip right over the crank snout and keyway. Within a minute or two it will be solidly mounted once the gear cools and contracts to its original size.

Another little thing you can do is throw an ice pack over the crank snout while you are waiting for the gear to heat up.
