Few questions.. I'm going without cats, and true dual exhaust... new thrush turbo mufflers.. rest stock
1. Where is the Lars tuning paper for Q-Jet's? How should I tune this carb?
2. How should I set the timing?
3. What kind of gas.. lower octane is better?
4. I have a exhaust leek wear the exhaust manifold connects to my exhaust pipe.. should I fix this before I take it?
5. Should I try some of the additives too?
6. You think if i slip the emmisions tester a $50 they'll pass me? j/k
After this Ill be tearing into my engine to put all my perf. parts I have on.. so the sooner a pass the faster I go!
Re: Going for evil emmisions this week!! (Blues77)
Mine is due too, so let me know how it goes...
I gor a paper form the state that basicaly says you and I are only die for an idle test, and a check of all original equipment. I'm missing the AIR pump, but think I'll be ok because they'll have a hard time proving it came with one ( I hope ). I do not need cats !!!
1. Where is the Lars tuning paper for Q-Jet's? How should I tune this carb? I think he was emialing to those who asked...
2. How should I set the timing? I think you want to retard as much as possble ...
3. What kind of gas.. lower octane is better? I would think the higher the better ...
4. I have a exhaust leek wear the exhaust manifold connects to my exhaust pipe.. should I fix this before I take it? Yes you should fix it. They won't care, but you should ( can you say FIRE !!! )
5. Should I try some of the additives too? Never never hurt. My dad swears by them.
6. You think if i slip the emmisions tester a $50 they'll pass me? j/k
They will also test your gas cap. Make sure it doesn't leak fumes.
They say the rpm 's gotta be between 350 and 1500. I wonder which end of the range is better for an idle only test???
Re: Going for evil emmisions this week!! (Blues77)
New set of plugs can't hurt. I think it would help to put a new set in just before you go. I could be wrong and I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. Also might be a special heat range plug or one of some type that might work better for emissions than for horsepower.
Re: Going for evil emmisions this week!! (Blues77)
Think the biggest problem will the absence of the CATS. They really clean up the exhaust. Still a properly tuned engine to stock specs with the carb set up for lean drop using a vacuum gauge, good plugs, wires and no misses runs pretty clean for 77 specs. If you don't pass they should give you the sheet on what to get fixed to pass. Whatever you do, don't tear down until you pass.
Good point Tom, they also check for the sticker and have a book lisitng what equipment should be there. However, I have seen in two states the people doing the testing are not the sharpest and best paid ones around.
Nope. Not listed on mine. 72 LS5. "VEHICLE EMMISION CONTROL INFORMATION". Talks about dwell, timing, plug gap, setting idle, using 91 or higher octane - but no AIR pump. It does say "IDLE MIXTURE PRESET AT FACTORY. DO NOT REMOVE CAPS" - could be a problem, but it was "professionally rebuilt" years ago.
Now "the book" could be a problem. I have a friend whose '72 got a triple crown - meaning it HAS the AIR pump - and he could not pass.
This should be interesting. I guess I'll get antique plate if I fail ...
Re: Going for evil emmisions this week!! (Blues77)
kinda long.... Reading the Q-jet carb book by Doug Roe. "the richer the mixture the higher the C0". and what creates HO is unburned gas. So the higher the octane the better it burnes? therefore I would want to put in higher octane, with a lean mixture? ( for some reason I remember reading another thread saying the lower the octance the better)
also it says the hotter the air will permit a leaner mixture, which reduces HC and CO.... so the hotter the car is running the better. Should I take out my 160 thermostate and put in a 210?
Re: Going for evil emmisions this week!! (sray454)
Blue77: I have a 77 L-48 with a 272 series crane cam. No smog pump(cane from the factory that way) and no Cat. conv. (I removed it and installed duals). I never have trouble passing emissions. I believe the specs are same; federal, not state mandated? I live in north Texas where we have the sniff test. Mine always is well below the specs. Change oil prior to the test, and make sure the car is up to temp.
A common failure on emissions is high hydrocarbons (HC). On Q-Jets the power piston may gum up and stick. If it is stuck in the up position it can cause a overly rich mixture at idle, leading to high HCs. Its easily fixed by removing the carb top and cleaning the power piston. Just in case!
I don't think the oil weight will matter. The car will be at operating temperature. On additives, I've never tried them. However I wouldn't hesitate if you fail.
Re: Going for evil emmisions this week!! (Blues77)
forum member .. Mike who lives in Shaumburg, passed. Just reading old e-mail he sent me.. Set idle high, but has to be below 1200.. lower octane gas, but timing retarded enough so no pinging. I thought those additives where almost a octane booster? Im confused now on low or high octane?
I just noticed your from Palatine, IL. I used to work for Abbott Labs (retired now) and spent a lot of time around that area. Lincolnshire, Rondout, Libertyville, Abbott Park, etc. Spent over a year commuting from Arlington, TX to Chicago every week. I wish our summers were like yours! You can have the winters!
Re: Going for evil emmisions this week!! (Blues77)
Blues,
The way I understand it is the lower the octane, the lower the temp it takes to start burning, giving you a more complete burn. The higher octane doesn't ignite as easily because in a higher compression/performance engine there is the possibility of it igniting prematurely or in more than one place in the cyl. at the same time causing pinging. By the way, they didn't even open my hood but they did check the gas cap. Hope this helps.
Mike
When I lived in MO we always thought you IL guys had it too easy as far emissions! MO's laws sucked! Here in SC we dont have emissions testing...or vehicle inspections for that matter! 'Course that is about the only good thing about this state. Well, that and the weather :yesnod: Good luck though, I was always nervous too...but I usually failed, but anyway...
