Battery Leaks Acid

I finally got the beast on the road and have almost 500 miles on it. Rarely do I drive it and I still have work to do.
Anyway - I noticed a 'ring' on the garage floor and figured it was from the battery area. I verified and see that the rectangular caps on the battery have small liquid on the edges... I assume that it is draining down the sides and leaking form the hole at the bottom of the battery storage area.
Due to the extreme cam and automatic tranny, at idle, the amp gauge shakes wildly, but if I add a few rpms, it settles down. While driving the amp gauge shows a slight charging mode most of the time.
I feel my gauge is good. I have a CS144 conversion and added the extra wire (no fuse) to the starter.
Would you guys offer guidance on what I might do to verify the charging system is working properly? Prior to putting teh car on the road, I took it to a local shop (Century Automotive - they are well known for their transmissions) to give a second look on most all bolts, brake conversion, alternator system etc..... and I trust them. They said the alternator was putting out 145amps and looked good.
Is there a set of test gauges or addiitonal gauge I can temporarily add?
I recall as a teenager my brother's Corvette battery started smoking (enough to melt the positive cable connection off the battery) and that left a paranoia with me on electrical matters.
