Looking under the car today I realized that my exhaust looks like it's falling off. The bottoms of the pipes are only about 2-3" from the ground where they run under the rear spring. Is this right? I did notice a Bubba-style coat hanger system of hanging portions of the exhaust. Any comments welcome.
Well, 75 vettes did not originally come with true duals, so you would have to drill the frame for proper hanging points. However, I got slightly bubba-ish on installing mine. I used L-brackets from the spare tire carrier bolts with rubber hanger straps to hold up the rear of the exhaust. I also bought a transmission mount hanger that is used on 74 vettes and installed that on my 79. Fit just fine. Your exhaust should be tucked up fairly close to the spring and diff, but it's wise to use a heat shield between the exhaust and spring, which you can also fabricate if necessary.
Thanks. Yeah, I knew it should have a cat but I think it's hanging low near the spring. I'm just worried about hitting a speedbump and ripping the whole system out. It's looking like I'm going to be taking a trip to an exhaust shop.
No problem. I think it's kind of tough for people to get the exhaust to hang right without the proper hanger mounts. You aren't the first person I've heard of having this problem. An exhaust shop may not touch it if you don't have a cat on there, you may want to tell them it's a 74. I got my hangars in the true dual kit from Mid America, but there were no instructions on how to hang the exhaust. I just hung it how it worked best. I knew I wanted the mufflers tucked under so I thought it best to have hangars near the muffs. Worked out fine. Good luck getting it tucked up where you want it.
