Oldguard7: Let me re-state my question...I know what valve to piston clearance is....my question was with regard to the Edelbrock E-Street heads requiring additional valve to piston clearance....how much is additional??. I do not want to buy these heads only to find out they will not work on my engine.
Now as far as what caused this...?????...I would like to know myself. I can see WHAT happened....I just do not know why...
Again these are re-worked GM 882 heads that I bought from a machine shop on-line....so as to the quality of their work...???? I did get 8 to 9K miles on them....so???
So can anyone surmise as to what caused this to happen ?
Valve float. Either a weak spring or to many RPM.
I would buy a set of AFR 195's because of the lightweight valve train components and beehive springs. They will allow about 500 more RPM before valve float with all else being the same. Hate to see you get it all back together and do the same thing. Check the cam lobe and lifter bottom while you have it apart. It looks like the valve just kissed the piston top. I bet the bottom end is fine. Your lucky. I did this before and nothing below the intake was salvageable.

AFR 195's would be nice....but my not able to go that much $$$ on this car. The Edelbrock E-Street heads are $900...and that is probably as much as I am willing to go.
I know they are high but the lightweight valvetrain package and extra horsepower is worth a lot. If it happens again you might not be so lucky. Put a rev limiter on it with a 6000 RPM chip if you go with the Edlebrock heads.
The E-Street (5073) heads have a max of 5500rpm which is also where my cam maxes-out. This engine is not a thunder maching by any means.....just a mild rebuild.
Again the AFR 195 would be really nice.....expensive, but nice. Would also be about 25% of the car's value. I have to decide how much I am willing to spend on this car. And just to add to this discussion....wife says sell it now for $2500 and get rid of it.
Did find out from Elelbrock what value of piston to valve clearance they need for each valve. It was in the installation instructions...got them on line.
