73 trailing arms shim question
Replacing my beatup t/as with a set of rebuilts. What are the functions of the shims? since i will not be using the same t/a removed do I still replace the old shims with new ones the same size as a base line and how will know if i need to use more or less shims. do the outside or inside shims get set first. Any other install tips would be greatly appreciated. Really do not want to do THIS again! Ran out of beer and four letter words several times during the removal, I'm hoping that the language during the install is much less colorful, so is my wife.Attached garage.

Rear trailing arm shims
The shims function is to set the proper toe-in of the rear wheels. Simply install new shims (stainless steel if possible) in thickness the same as the old shims, then have the rear alignment reset. I also always put some anti-seize type grease on the new shims to make them easier to remove or replace at a later date. The inner or outer shim packs can be installed in any sequence, although I feel like it is easier to install the inner first and the outer last. Good luck.

The AIM explains the shimming procedure. Set toe and shim inside first. Outside stack last.
That gets you in the ball park and should get you safely to the alignment shop.
