Default Help me re-build an engine.....

My next project is a rebuild of my 1972 L-48 350

Will I be able to find an engine builder that can pull my motor, rebuild it & re-install it - and reach the following goals that I have ?

Goals: 375hp ; 425TQ
Budget: $4k

Parameters:

* Use my stock L48 block (383 conversion ok)
* Use stock air cleaner
* Use stock Q-Jet
* Use stock intake manifold (or low profile substitute)
* Use stock heads (or moderately priced USA made units)
* Use stock exhaust manifolds
* Use stock M-20 4-speed (2.52 1st gear)
* Use stock 3.36 rear gears

I would like to maintain a stock look (with original brackets, pulleys, sheilding, valve covers, etc) - and have it sound like an LT1 or L46 - and have it all fit under a 1972 small block Corvette hood

Am I dreaming ? - or is this possible?

Also, What would you recommend for camshaft (grind - plus hydraulic/solid/roller), CR, heads, pistons, crank, valve size, lifters ...etc

Thanks for your time
Kevin

The normal remove and replace on a regular car around here is at least $500. If that is the case it leaves $3,500 for the engine rebuild. I am thinking you may need to expand your budget a bit.
I'd suspect an R&R will cost a little more for a vette.

Default Ask yourself if you want the best you can get or the least you can get by with.

You can't have it both ways. Buy a crate engine.

So judging by wha tyou want to reuse you expect to gain a lot of HP by just changing a cam. An engine is an air pump, you are going to saddle it with stock intake and exhaust and crappy heads, maybe you will buy new heads and expect it to make HP. Anything is possible but not with that budget. Get an aluminum intake and paint it orange. The Qjet can be made to work. The heads even if aluminum can be painted orange. The 383 will help it in the power dept. The manifolds are going to be restrictive but some guys have made good power with them if ported correctly. HP cost money. Crate engine is easy and quick.

If you gave me 4 grand I could do and still pocket some money!! Forget the 383 unless you want 500 ponies, find some TPI heads and a cam shaft and you got 400hp. Taking everything apart is easy I would do that then take all the pieces to a machine shop. I recently dropped 1000 bucks and had the block cleaned and pressure checked, cylinders honed, camshaft lined bored and bearings installed, crank line honed and rotating assy balanced. They also purchased main cap bearings but did not install. Piston rings being $100 depending on your choice then have the short block assyembled maybe you spend 1500 total. That is using the stock bottom end, it will work just fine. A decent cam is around $150 with lifters, great deal. A used set of TPI heads $200 or less. They bolt right up to a stock manifold but you can find a GM that flows a little better or like $100 bucks for an edelbrock. Around $2000 for parts and the short block assembled. You still have $2000 to figure out how to get the motor in and out of the car and the top end bolted together. It can be done but you can't expect someone to do all the work for $4000.

I think the motor will fit all your wants but for 2......They have center bolt valve covers and I don't think it will fit under your 72 hood but I am sure they would change to a performer intake so you can use your Qjet.....Now I know you will give up some upper HP with that intake but prolly whatever motor you choose you are limited in under the hood area. I just built myself a motor for my 76 based off the Year One specs and went with the Performer Intake so could still use my Q-jet without a adapter and it runs great.

Good Luck

If someone where to put together the year one engine minus the porting, about how much would it end up being? How much are they making off their assembly??
