Have a 454 in a 79 corvette. Broke a tooth off the flywheel so having to remove the manual transmission. Had to loosen up the rear end so I could get the drive shaft loose and pushed back out the way. Had to remove the shifter from the bottom side and linkage to transmission. Got the tranny slid back but still have 1.5" in the housing. This is such a huge PITA!!!! Seems almost impossible to get to the housing bolts with the tranny still in. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes removed the shifter itself from the top and bracket from bottom. Just seems like theres not quite enough room to get the tranny out with pulling the motor. I just cant believe that you would have to pull or move the motor to remove the tranny and then housing and flywheel.

You didn't say anything about the crossmember, did you remove it? I've never done this to a Vette, but any other car of this vintage, I always removed the crossmember. Just my .02.

The crossmember cannot be removed on a manual trans car.
Maybe not the same thing, but have a friend that did a 5 speed Keisler upgrade from a 4 speed in a 79' L-82 car, and mentioned having to jack up the rear of the engine to get the tranny out. This info may be on the Keisler site. If needing more, maybe set up an engine picker, breaking the mount's loose to move it a bit without all the extra work of pulling it. Hope this help's a bit.
I had to rotate my transmission while moving it back to get it to go back into the tunnel far enough to remove.
Rotate the transmission about 90 degrees , remove the slip yolk (put a plastic bag over the tail housing with a rubber band to catch any leaks), and it should slide back far enough for the input shaft to clear the bell housing.
Ive tried rotating the tranny, maybe i just haven't found the rite spot yet. I have drained all the fluid out so no real worries there, and the yolk was removed. I am going to try and post some pics tonight so maybe that will help my description.

Sounds right, I've done it some years ago. No need to pull the engine. I don't remember all details but probably removed all brackets and shift arms. It took some manuvering, not a lot of room. Yes, a huge PITA... You need to slide it back far enough for the input shaft to clear the bell housing, then drop the front and slide it out.
Do you have the chassis service manual? I haven't looked at mine in a long time but imagine there would be a description in there for pulling the transmission.
