my computer turns on the check engine light for the EGR valve. I can't really check it as it is not there. Is there something I can hook to the wires to lie to the ECM and make it think it is and stop turning the light on? I'm not going to put a EGR valve on this engine and I just want it to stop whinning.
i am not shure on a 81 but i dont think that the egr has a direct hookup to the computer .so the computer may be reading the symptoms and giving you that code .i would look into a new 02 sensor and look into a possible vac leak.
My info only goes back to 82, I don't see ANY EGR codes, what code do you have?
CODE 32
Trouble Code 32 indicates that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve diaphragm is not where the ECM expects it to be. The ECM controls the diaphragm with a Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) waveform. The EGR has a vacuum bleed solenoid that adjusts the vacuum applied to the EGR valve based on this pulse width. If there is sufficient vacuum at the EGR valve, a switch closes to send a signal back to the ECM. The absence of this signal is the bases for code 32.
The conditions for setting this code are:
no vacuum to EGR (switch open), and
Code 33 or 34 (MAF error) is not present, and
engine running and LV8 is less than 100, and
coolant temperature is > 118 deg F (48 deg C), and
the EGR solenoid duty cycle is < 65%, and
the above conditions are met for more than 25 seconds
Code 32 on a 1981 is for map sensor, how modified is your car? The only info in the manual is regarding resistance that the egr solelnoid should hace OVER 30 ohms resistance. If you really are getting an egr code, you'll want to install a 50 (?) ohm resister in between the grey and the pink/black wires that connect to where the egr solenoid used to be. Are you running any other original smog equipt?
ECM is still there along with O2 sensor and temp sensor. All other (incl EGR and air injection) is gone.

The wires were cut and the harness re-wrapped. Someone got a pic of where they were to come out at?

Reveiwed my manual, the egr solenoid & bleed solenoid are (poor picture) located somewhere near the front of the carb/air cleaner area. I'm guessing the wires are cut there or in the loom near the map & baro sensor. The egr solenoid has pink-blk & a grey wire, the bleed has a pink-blk & lt blue wire.
