I am planning on starting and engine build in the near future and wanted to know if there are any good reference materials on steps/procedures for assembling an engine. I already have some of David Vizar's books but they deal with components rather than acutal assembly.
I have done some engine work in the past in high school auto mechanics but we won't discuss how long ago that was. I am pretty confident that I can assemble my own engine and save myself the labor costs but would like to have something to go by.
Thats a good question. I took a course in college and thats where I got all my info from. You got Me thinking of any books that cover just assembly. The only thing I can think of is the chilton type car manuals usually have just engine assembly manuals. I have not looked inside to see what their like but Im sure they would be perfect for what You need.

How to build the small block Chevy by SA books, if I were to build another motor right now that is the only book I need. Follow every page carefully and you should have a good running motor
Planning on starting from a bare machined block that has been clearanced for a 383 build.
Oh OK, Then Motorheads link would be worth the money.
With the bare block sitting in front of you, it wouldnt be difficult to go ahead and make the block ready for oem Roller assemblies too. Weld on some bosses in the valley for bolting in the spider assembly ect. Youd need to research for the write up though to get the whole scoop.

The block I am going to use is from a late model car so it already has the oem hyd. roller cam provisions. I am going this route and bag the original engine that is in the car in case I ever decide to sell it.
