Default Burning Oil

I think i am burning oil when giving it hell and WOT. Nothing too noticable just a puff of smoke now and then. Im using Mobile 1 Synthetic. Should I go back to conventional oil or keep using Synthetic it is a lot more expensive. Could synthetic oil be the reason it is burning oil? Can I just switch back with no problem? Is burning synthetic oil worse than burning conventional oil?

I'm not an expert...but noted nobody replied and think you deserve a response!! There are a lot of ways engines can use oil, ranging from weak rings/valves, to guides, to seals, to PCV problem, to poorly sealed intakes etc etc....

Diagnosing sometimes isn't that easy! Is your engine high miles since last rebuild? Any work done lately, ie headwork, intake changed? Anything that might have coincided with you noticing the smoke?

If a puff of smoke on startup, likely valve seals. What is viscosity of oil? Did you change from mineral recently? If so, and especially if higher mileage engine, changing viscosity from say 10W30 to 10W40 or in warm weather to 20W50 may make the problem disappear or at least minimize it.

Really need more info on your engine and symptoms (when you notice the smoke, how much oil is consumed, recent changes which may be more than a coincidence) will help the real experts here guide you!

I wouldn't use synthetic though in an engine that for whatever reason is consuming oil. Just too expensive to go out the tail pipe!!
