Default One Issue One Request 1974 Stingray L48

I have looked for about an hour and can not find the answers. First, OEM air cleaner for a 1974 L48 does someone have a picture of a factory set-up? I do not think my air cleaner is the right one. Or any suggections on aftermarket. Second, I blow the lower radiator hose last night and worked on replacing it for a few hours, What is the trick if any to get it on right? My hands will not fit. I really am thinking that I should take the hood off, fan and shroud out and lossen the radiator. Is this the way or is there a trick?

Thanks for all the help you guys have been giving to me scine last week when I bought my first Corvette.

Richard

After my rebuild on my 75 we noticed that the bottom hose was not on all the way and leaking. We put the car back on the lift and after a lot of cussing and 2 guys and every wrench we finally got it back on. Its just easier to find a cure for the common cold. Good luck

I remember the frustration of the lower rad hose. I believe I ended up puting block side on first, then did rad side from underneath. One hand and pulled every muscle from wrist to ankle and used every cuss word, i think I even invented a few words. I cant believe that these cars were on an assembly line. I think if I was doing it again I would try soaking it in hot water, and use gloves. Good luck and it does go on.

I will take a picture of the cleaner but this close to the same shape only diff is the top cap.

I saw that some year have hoses that went to above the Radiator for colder air.

My son and I both have 74's. Mine is an L48. The Mike Ward photo shows the correct air cleaner. The one from Mudtime is not correct. No easy way to do the lower hose but soaking it in hot water and getting access from below are both good ways to go.

I don't think this is off any Vette that I ever saw. Certainly not off a 74.

Thanks for posting the photo of your air cleaner. It makes it easier to reply that this is not a stock vette air cleaner. Look at the one from Mike Wards reply. That is what a stock air cleaner would look like.

The 74 has cowl induction on the hood, and you need an open air filter element to take advantage of this.

Here is a picture of the air cleaner on my Vette. I was replacing the water pump, lower radiator hose, fuel pump, fuel lines, thermostat and housing and removed the AC unit. I normally do not ride around with the tolld either on top (I know someone will add 2 cents about that LOL)

That's not a Corvette air cleaner of any sort. The one in Mike Ward's post is what was used on all 74's. 73's use the same air cleaner also, and 75's look the same when installed, but have some differences to the base and seal ring.

It looks like bubba adapted the base from some other car to use on your 74. 73-75 air cleaners are dual snorkle, not single snorkle like yours, and never had a thermo air control, in the snorkle. A 74 unit would have the hood seal installed on a removable ring, not dirrectly to the ac base. That cover on the filter looks home made, too.

The air cleaners with the flexible hoses attaching to duct work, that you asked about, were used from 76 to 81. 76-79 L-48's used one hose and a single snorkle air cleaner. 76-79 L-82s, and all 80-81's, had 2 hoses and a dual snorkle air cleaner.

Minor correction for the record. The twin snorkel for the L48 started in 1979, not 1980.
