Default Potential for Spark Plug Wire Damage with Loom?

(With apologies to original poster; I forget his name.)

I have these looms (not installed) but have concerns about wire damage from heat. The wires are placed directly above the stock exhaust manifolds albeit with a space in-between. Assuming no direct contact with the manifolds is this a workable setup for plug wires?

Yes, been running that style of loom for 10+ years on my 73. It has hooker headers and I race it so the headers get very hot. Never had one melt.

Default Try Underneath

Some of the aftermarket wire looms are not beneficial and cause problems no matter how fancy they look.....however by running the wires underneath the manifolds you should never burn any wires...n that position, {under} you remove the wires from the highest temperature area thus protecting them and you get the wires out of sight and clean up the engine bay as a bonus

They could melt and leave me stranded. But they are now on with horizontal looms. Took some time but they don't look bad at all. In fact I rather like the look. And the car runs well so far. We shall see.

Ironcross,

I have an AC Delco stock 508N set in reserve if need be.

I'm also running that style of loom on my '73 without issues.

Here's a couple:

The heat socks are due to the proximity of the plug boots to the cast headers. I kept burning plug boots so finally replaced them with better boots and added the heat socks for good measure. Now that I've had the engine dyno tuned, temps are down and I may not even need them anymore.

I've had that style of loom installed for a few months now. I'm running the stock rams head headers with no issues so far.

Me too. 10 years with Hooker sidepipe headers and no problems.

Thanks for the pics! I have been busy installing DRLs and time flew by. My garage is not heated and working in 34*F temps is not pleasant but that job is almost done....

I have never seen exhaust manifolds like that. They are not GM and they are not headers. Interesting! I can see why the plug boots might have encountered issues; #s 3-4-5-6 are terribly close to the exhaust metal. Mine run straight-on under the rams horns so do not see that kind of heat (as with dbguettl's pics). I hope your boot problem does not re-occur this summer.

That is re-assuring as your pics show exactly what I have. You did not seem to use the provided spacers on the valve cover mount bolts so I have a little bit of extra insurance on the horizontal wires with those. That straight-on boot at the steering box is a nuisance but it does fit on with some finesse.

I had to do some mods on the passenger side because of the A/C compressor. The forward wire hold-down block there did not fit so it was omitted. The #2-4 wires run inside the A/C horizontal bracket and are kept well away from heat. I am working with the manufacturer (not a vendor) on a solution for that problem. They have been cooperative if a little slow. But I can understand that: it is a busy time of year.

They are Sanderson cast headers. Previous owner installed them. Here's a link for anyone interested:

I installed the heat socks in the fall of 2008. No issues since then.
