i have a 79 L-82 and I'm thinking of getting a 268 comp cam, edlebrock performer intake, headers, true dual exhaust, and ignition to get a little more horsepower and was wondering if i should keep my stock 600 q-jet or get an edlebrock 600, 650 or 750 even? what would you suggest for the best set up for performance? And what other mods would you suggest?
Q-jets are 795 to 825 CFM, they'll put plenty of fuel in your engine. They can be a little tricky to tune, but if you get them setup for your engine, they'll perform as good as any carb.
The edelbrock performer is of no performance gain over a aluminum L-82 intake. My first 79 L-82 mod was no emmissions, head work, cam and headers with true duals. You end up with 30-40% power gain. Compression and good flowing heads was the next major gain.
The stock carb is a 795 cfm Rochester Q-Jet. The reason it has such a large cfm rating are the HUGE secondaries. Very good for all-around use. And Edelbrock sells a nice Q-Jet replacement from original tooling -- it should resolve any performance-related issues you may have.
By your list of goodies, I think you are headin in the right direction for sure :D . Just a suggestion: A Weiand Dual Plane "Action Plus" Intake will fit under your hood and will accept either a square bore or spread bore carb, if you ever want to switch........ :yesnod: :seeya GOOD LUCK
Yea what they said. The Stock Q-jet on a 79 was 795cfm. You can put on the 825cfm Q-jet if you can find one it works well. Also would run the XE262 Comp Cam. Its what I have and it yours great for me. If you go hotter then this cam you may start seeing some vac. Problems.
BTW it’s great to see another white 79 becoming faster!
Alright, thanks for the advice! So how does this set up sound for my 79 L-82 with an auto tranny sound - the stock 795 cfm carb (for now) weiand dual plane "action plus" #8004 intake, and the XE 262 comp cam????????
I Highly recomend the Comp Cams K-kit. It comes with the following: Camshaft, Lifters, Timing Chain/Gears, Valve Springs, Spring Retainers and Locks, and Valve Springs
Which is every thing you should replace if your doing a cam swap. Also new set rocker tips and pushrods are not a bad idea either. My 2 Cents.
