My swap-meet M-20 has a twist in the input shaft. The twist was not noticeable until I installed the tranny and found that the clutch wouldn't slide all the way back. I needed to get on the road, so I bubba'd the pilot shaft splines with a dremel tool. As you'd expect, I now have quite the clutch chatter.
Question: Can I install a new pilot shaft without a complete tear down? I'm thinking that with some good stiff grease, I might get those pin bearings to behave long enough to smack it together. Anybody do this before?
Re: Easliy Replace Pilot Shaft on Muncie? (Schwee)
A helpful hint. Put the heavy grease in the freezer for an hour or so before you start. Stand the trans on its end while installing the input shaft.
Hey, what do you have to loose by trying.

I just put a new input shaft in mine. you do have to remove most of the guts in the trans. The counter shaft can stay in but that is about all. The hole is smaller than 4th gear. Get a new shaft and do it right the first time so you don't have to do it again.
Re: Easliy Replace Pilot Shaft on Muncie? (Schwee)
I rebuilt my entire tranny last year. Just replacing the input shaft isn't that big of a problem. You won't need to press any gears on, but you will need a special tool (or grind down an old open end wrench to be skinnier) to loosen and retighten the nut that holds it in place. You will also need to remove the tail piece and reverse gear, and the main shaft. There's also some inner bearings in the input shaft which are loose in a cage...it's just annoying so you need patience with it.
