Default 850 CFM carb?

A guy at a local auto parts store told me to buy an edelbrock quadrajet 850 cfm carb for my 69' 350. This seems a little much for a stock engine. Any thoughts? Should I stick with the factory quadrajet? What should I do????

That really seems to be over carbed. I would think that a 600 or 650 would be more than adequate for your stock needs. The guys running 383 strokers or highly modded 350 can run the 750's. But I am sure others more knowlegable than me will chime in soon.

You definatly dont need an 850cfm for a 350ci. Im gettin by just fine up to 5500rpm with my lowly holley 600. However, the big Q-jets, regardless of thier size, or the size of the engine, can be tuned to run on just about anything. Lars is the Q-jet guru. Maybe he could chime in and explain.

Quadrajets are a different carb seems like you need more CFM for some reason.

I know Edelbrock was putting 850's on their 350ci crate engines at one time

That guy wants a big commission or something. 750 w/vac sec is the biggest you would want to go and that is too big in my opinion. I have a 600 with vac sec and it is great till about 4500-5000 rpm's and then falls off but I don't go over 5000 so it is good for me. The Quadra-jet is designed different than most carbs in that it has diff size primary and secondary ventura (sp?) or air passages. The primary is about half the size of the secondary so it gives good low end torque/power and has a pretty good kick when the secondaries open. If you go double pumper with mech secondaries 600 or 650 should be good.

600 or Q-J. One example, CARBS Tests TQ/HP. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=233837

Stay away from that guy at the parts store ! ...he'd probably sell ya the Brooklin Bridge, too !

850 would even be a bit much for my Big Block !
....I'd stay with 600-650 and you'll visit gas stations less often.
