Default engine oil additives (stop leak)

Hi have a 1980 L48 (non rebuilt engine approx 15000km) and have some small leaks in the engine. I know I shoulsjust rebuild but thatproject has to wait a couple years. I saw some products from wynns and bardhall etc that is a stop leak engine oil treatment. is it safe to use these additives? and do they work? If so what do you suggest?

Your manual strongly suggests using no additives. Tighten the bolts

I'm always concerned what else the addative is trying to stop in the engine. I'd replace the seals/gaskets the correct way and do your rebuild when you're ready.

Just think about it, if fixing a leak is as simple as putting some liquid additive stuff in there, then why places like sewage systems, oil and gas plants .. etc don't use it and spend millions of dollars fixing and maintaining their lines?

No to stop leak additives, if you're not sure where the leak is coming from first clean the engine and just take your time and replace the gaskets where needed as I have, good luck Ed

Your valve covers could be leaking if the bolts are too tight and you are using cork caskets.
Are you using synthetic or mineral oil?

Start changing all the gaskets. I was on a limited budget and did all mine with the help of this forum over the last couple of years. I had no experience with engines and I was able to do almost all of them. All the gaskets are avail at your local auto parts store and not expensive. Fun to work on the engine. Cheap tools at harbor freight if you are just starting.

Find a leak and ask a question and we will answer it for you.
