Has anyone installed headers with a set of '69 side pipes/stock mufflers? Any pics from under the car? I have a set of Mr. Gasket headers that angle out at 45 degrees at the collector - just can't see it in my mind...
Yeah, the Hookers, et al, are designed to dump into those big ol' Hooker side pipes with the inserted muffler baffles. I would like to continue using the '69 side pipe mufflers, which actually will have to be cut somewhere on the inlet pipe - they are one solid piece all the way to the stock ram's horn manifold.
Maybe I should just go with "shorty" headers and only have to modify the pipe a little bit
You are going to have to use the "shorty" style of header or you'll be making U turns under the car with exhaust tubing. Due to the limited performance gain with the short style of header I would be inclined to keep the stock manifolds.
Thanks Fontking, but I have the factory side covers and want to use those and the mufflers that fit underneath. With their extended length, it will be difficult. I did see that Hedman Headers has a set (#68280) they list as fitting "factory side pipes", but I would like to see a pic of that before I order online :) . It may be that I install sides like you have and just sell the covers and mufflers I have now...
Go back a couple of weeks in this forum. There were pictures of both Heddman and Stahl headers shown. Their web sites show them as well. The Stahls are top quality large tube equal length headers, but do reduce ride height somewhat. Hedmans are unequal length with smaller tubes, but fit under the car better. I guess it depends on what kind of performance your looking for...
Thanks, Wrencher - I found the previous posts you referred to. They all show that I have the wrong set of headers :) ! The ones I have angle out at 45 degrees, while these go straight out of the car at 90 degrees. I did find a company near me called Spiral Turbo Specialties that makes a kit that fits under the factory covers - waiting to hear back from them on a price, but that looks the easiest. Either way, I have several options to consider and I can probably use the headers I have, given a decent muffler shop. You guys rock like old Van Halen.
I have the heddman headers with factory side pipes. The headers fit really good. I cut the drivers side pipe and welded the collector right on, a perfect fit, on the passenger side I had to extend the side pipe by about 1.5" before the curve into the collector.
