Default valve lash/adjustment question:

What characteristics will an engine exhibit (while running) when you have adjusted the valve lash to zero and then tightened each rocker nut down too far??? How might it run, and would this mean that the valves never actually close all the way?? Thanks!

With one or more valves adjusted too tight the engine will idle VERY rough.. As a matter of fact it will be worse than with a plug wire off. Even one tight intake valve will make the engine backfire through the carb.. I have found that although GM calls for 1 turn past zero lash, 1/2 - 3/4 seems to work better on older lifters. I have had some that would not take a full turn and smooth out. I also had a bad lifter that would make the engine miss at ANY point past zero. Starting at zero, adjust the valves 1/4 turn at a time, letting the engine smooth out before going another 1/4 turn. If it won't smooth out then you must run them a little looser.

thanks for the advice Silver. I'll loosen them up a bit to see if that's my problem.
