Default 82 corvette over heating and hood problem

i got a 82 corvette but the previous owner put in a 1978 small block engine with a carb on top the engine. it has eldbrock performer intake manifold. The carb is leaking gas... i want to put in a new carb. what is the best carb (name. barrels, cfm) to buy for this set up and what hood or hood type/style is good to use on this car that will give the car good air suction or flow to the carb. the car over heat. it has a flex fan mounted on to the engine.. the fan is constantly running when the engine is running. it has a new 3 rows radiator.

thanks

I can't help you with the carb but as far as the overheating issue goes, is your thermostat working? That would be a start. Is the water pump in good shape? Does the radiator have the shroud attached? Any or all of these things can cause overheating.

if the fan is connected to the water pump it is suppose to turn all the time .you said that the motor over heats .what temp does it go to ,check thermostat.have the carb that you have rebuilt.

Quadra-Jet 4 barrel

Get rid of the flex fan. Run the stock 82 fan, clutch, shroud, and auxilary electric fan.

Check to ensure your radiator seals are in good shape.

Yes Sir; These guys are all on the money, look at all these problems first. I had a guy tell me he was overheating, but it never boiled out, if it isn't boiling out (over) it could be the gauge, It ended up being in his mind, it just seemed to be hot. LOL The electric fan relay does not kick in, until it reaches around 230 degrees

Have you replaced the radiator cap? Sounds like you have a pressure leak.

Rebuild the carb you have....what is it...a Holley or QJet?

Get rid of that fan....they never did work, go back to factory.... That would take care of low speed temps.

The easist carb for replcement is the Edelbrock 4106, $299 at Jegs or Summit.

Make sure the radiator cap is good, and that it is screwed down tightly. Also be sure there is no air in the system. These are likely culprits if it gurgles after shutdown.

2 fans sounds good, but they fight each other. one good mech fan w/a shroud will do the trick if the rad is good.

Don't forget to check your bottom radiator hose. They can collapse when they get hot. I put in one with a spring to avoid this problem.

Good Luck!
