My paint is in sorry - oxidized, chipped - shape. I was going to rub on it this weekend but am wondering if rubbing compound will leave a residue behind that will interfere with painting later. I was hoping to get by without too much prep work before I start spraying.
I dont "think" it will harm the next coat of paint that ya put on, but any silicone spray will. It causes orange peel, and paint bubbles etc, so ya need to go over the paint with some wax remover. 3M is a good source.
All of the Meguiar's brand of 'Mirror Glaze' polishing compounds are designed to be 'paintable', and having used them, I can attest to this. Nonetheless, you should wipe down the surface with clear water after polishing to remove any remaining abrasive, which you don't want in a new paint job or mixed-up with wax. Good luck!
Rubbing compound won't intefere with your future paint job...Mequires & 3M make good products....go to a local body supply store and see what they can help you with. You probably want a finer compound and you always want to use the lightest grade you can get by with. Rubbing compound just takes over where sand papers leave off...and is nothing more than liquid sand paper.
A good solution to get off the excess compound is Water mixed with rubbing alcohol and lint free towels. Don't forget to wax after you rub it out....to protect you're new polished finish. And be careful with the buffer....no fun seeing a primer spot in your paint :cuss
