I needed to tighten the screws in my tilt column and in the process now have to replace my ignition lock. The question is how do the tumblers release so I can make the new one match my original keys?
There is a Utube video from Dorman that shows a single pin push and the tumbler comes out on a Chrysler, no such luck on the Corvette.
If it is a pre 1974 column mounted ignition and your ignition key operates the doors and you want to keep it that way, you should have purchased an uncoded or universal ignition which comes disasembled. Pop in the proper tumblers, springs, peen on the spring retainer cap and assemble. Any good locksmith can do it. If its 1974 C3 and up, the ignition key operated just the ignition so it should not matter unless you have other reasons.
GM ignitions of that vintage weren't made to be serviced. You would have to grind the back of the ignition cylinder to first remove the part that engages the rack gear and there is more. It can be done but not practical. They just are not made to be serviced. In 1979, they also changed the method the ignition cylinders were held in the column.
Thanks for the clarification. I actually have a post 79 new lock cylinder and wanted to swap the body from my 78 to it ... sounds like it is not going to work - will have to get a pre 79 version.
