Ok I now I am not the only idiot who has ran into his/her garage for whatever reason. :bb My insurance company, State Farm, is telling me I have to pay both my auto deductable ($250) and my homeowner deductable ($500) in order to get my nose cone fixed and my garage fixed. :mad Does this sound right. I think I should only have to pay the higher of the two. I asked to see it in writing before I pay both. Anyone else have this experience?
I'll give you a Canadian perspective. Many (but not all) insurers here where they insure both the car and the auto will charge only one deductible, the higher one as you suggest in your post.
There is no legislative requirement or rule requiring this, it is simply more a matter of being "customer friendly" given the customer has all of the personal insurance placed with the one company. Similarly, virtually all companies provide some sort of discount (applied to the property policy) for having both auto and home covers together.
Having said this, I don't know what the business practices are, nor the regulatory issues could be in your state. The approach that you suggest is fair though, is very common here and I suspect there also. Might be an issue to take "up the line" to the claims manager. The concession required is relatively small and may be within that individual's discretion to waive the charge.
Hate to tell you this, but this is a classic case of fix it yourself and shut your mouth.....you NEVER should have reported this claim....
the chances of your premiums going through the roof are very high...on both homeowners and auto....
I"m convinced insurance is a legalized scam run by lawyers.....pure and simple....
Looks like they got me. One of the neat clauses that no one knows about untill it comes up which states they do not cover property you OWN but would if I rented it. :bs
Guess State Farm is going to have to decide if, as a customer, I am worth $250 or not. I can always go elsewhere. I'll talk directly to my agent.
Guess this is a good lesson for all you other forum members: don't run into your garage if your insurance doesn't cover it. :)
As far as the car goes, they would have to raise my rates ($17/month) on it about 3500% to even get close to the cost of the nose cone alone ($600+). If they raise my rates I'll go elsewhere, there is no accident report on it so no other insurance company can find about it. It was a dumb accident but isn't that what insurance is for, accidents?
Many years ago I sold insurance for Prudential. While an agent I had a break into my garage, lost tools and parts out of my Vette. Had to pay two deductibles.
Also, if they pay on a claim, even without an accident report, the insurance companies use a loss report showing any claims, and these are exchanged by insurance companies.
Case in point, I wrote a homeowners policy on a buddy’s home. Said he’d never had a claim in many years. Underwriting came back and said he’d had a loss just a year before. Found out that his wife had broken a large picture window while he was out of town, and had it replaced with insurance.
Auto and homeowners are seperate policies. I think there's a law requiring them to be seperate, thus yes...two deductibles. I think there should be a law about raising premiums too!
I just think since it was one incident, as in one incident caused both the damage to my car and garage, that it should be covered by one deductible. Like I said earlier, if I was renting my garage, they would pay for it.
"And like a good neighbor, State Farm is there" to screw you.
I did get almost $900 less my $250 deductible for the bumber repair. I am looking at the flexiglass bumbers, a little cheaper in price and I think I want to eliminate the bumper seam. Oh, well I will cover it with a bra for a year or two then get the whole car touched up when I redo the bumber. The paint is in very good condition except for some scratched and minor chips here and there. It's a driver not a show car.
