I believe my speedo cable is bad as transmission fluid is dripping and Speedometer needle is bouncing a lot. I see that there are lower and upper cables available. Do I need to replace both of them and how do you know? Is this something I can handle considering my moderate level of mechanical skills?
The lower speedo cable is fairly easy to replace. You want to make sure the area in the transmission is very clean. The rubber seal should be very lightly greased. The upper cable can be replaced but it is a bit of fighting with the firewall gromet and unclipping from guage cluster while laying on your back with head under dash.

I don't think the cable itself is causing the leak. The cables should have no contact with transmission fluid. You will probably find that the driven gear and the seal is bad.
Thanks Guys. I'll get under the car and check it out in more detial. Looks like the gear and seal replacement won't be that big of a deal. Wish me luck!
once the cable is unscrewed at the transmission, you can twist / pull out the "bullet" and the gear will pull with it. you can then check the O-ring and seal in the end of it.
