ok i have a 76 iv owned for just over a year, iv posted a few times on here and always got great advise. i am not a mechanic however i can figure out the basics. i have had the motor rebuilt with flat top pistons and performance cam, performance fuel pump, performance distributer. it is an automatic, headers.
i want to pick up some extra hoursepower looking for ideas to pick up 50-100 extra horse. any suggestions as to what would be the best way to go next, thought about changing gear ratio but im not so sure thats a job i want to tackle myself and very pricey to have done.
50 to 100 HP on a basically stock motor is a lot to pick up. You will need to get good flowing cylinder heads and get a cam to match the rest of the components on the car. An intake and carb and you say you have headers but you had better have a good flowing rest of the exhaust system.
it has an upgraded manifold, holly 750 carb, and straight pipe exhaust i know its a performance cam but not sure as to what it is, the heads where redone but again i dont know what the specs on it are. there is plenty of horsepower i guess what i am wondering is there any way to get batter response without digging into the rear end?
If they are the stock cylinder heads they are not flowing much air. They were not very good heads. As to get the most performance from what you have make sure the iginition is good and the distributer has the correct advance in it and the carb is giving you the correct AF ratio. You need to maximize what you have first before digging into anything else. I would assume you have an automatic with 3.08 gears in the rear. Knowing what cam you have would help. It might be to big or small for your combo.
If you are looking for that much horsepower quickly, look into a nitrous oxide system. You could put an arming switch somewhere near the driver's seat, and wire the "go" lead into the same switch that operates the cowl induction solonoid in the hood....
Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?
