Default Got it started but now I lost reverse??? 71 BB

I just replaced the bellhousing and the oil pan. I am getting ready to take it to the muffler shop but I am having some problems. I must have messed up the shift linkage. It almost goes into reverse but not enough. Which lever on a muncie is reverse. Are there any easy procedures. If I had my wife here, I'd have her in the car while I look and see what moves when it goes in reverse and just spin it out a few more times.

Any advice??

The reverse lever is the one closest to the center of the car. It goes to the farthest back shift arm.

I really must have messed something up. I got it in reverse after adjusting it a little. I almost couldn't get it out of reverse and it still grinds going in. I can't get it in first but second worked.

Any adjustment procedures out there???

I know it's a pain to jack it up and crawl under there and tinker, but that's what you need to do.

As for a procedure, how about:

1. Remove all the linkages from the tranny...should be just clips holding them on...leave the levers there so you can shift manually.
2. Shift each gear back and forth a couple of times to make sure they go in and out OK...then position each one in the neutral position.
3. You will have to peek up into the gear shift lever mechanism to see where it's neutral is...there will be a notch in it between the 1/2 and 3/4 gear levers...this is the neutral position. I think it's easiest to start with 1/2 gear linkage and adjust it to neutral, then take remove the 1/2 gear linkage and then adjust the 3/4 gear linkage...it doesn't matter which one you do first as long as you do them independently.
4. Adjustment for the rear is about the same, though I think it helps to have the 1/2 and 3/4 linkage already installed and adjusted...that way you will always know it's in neutral BEFORE trying to shift it into reverse. The reverse gear tends to grind with the 1st gear even when adjusted properly, so it's always best to make sure it's completely neutral.

Hope this helps
