I want to put new exhaust on my '71 350, auto trans. I'm going to use the factory type tips. Which mufflers should I get? I'm tinking on using 2" pipe if so which should I get? 40 or 50 Series, 2 or 3 chamber. I want something loud and deep sounding. I noticed in the Summit cat. that the mufflers com all different ways like center and outlet, offset or not. Once I tell them what kind of car I got they will know about what inlet and outlet I need? Thanks Ray.
If you want something loud then go for Delta 40's, I don't know if they go anything less then 2.25" though. Go to Flowmasters site and they have an application menu. If you want something a little more mellow and long trip friendly then go with the Delta 50's, I really like mine.
Hey,
I have Flowmaster 40s. The piping I used is 2.25" and the mufflers are offset inlets and center outlets. I also kept the stock look with the exit tips. The sound they put out is awesome. It was one of my favorite days ever when I got on it pulling away from the exhaust shop. Click on the link in my sig to see some more pics of the setup.
If you like the flowmasters try the hooker mufflers. I just put a set of max flows on my car with 2.5 inch pipe and a reducer to use the stock tips. It sounds awesome and the mufflers are black so they are a little harder to see. It makes the rear of the car look cleaner. i understand the aerochambers by hooker sound just like the flowmaster (a little less metallic in my opinion) but flow alot better.
Well, I dont know about it in a vette, but I got a set of 2 chamber 40 series in my mustang GT 2000 and the sound is very gentle when cruising, but a WOT is really what I like, brutal just to say. yesnod:

If you want louder then go with the two chamber flowmasters. I too retained the factory exaust tips on my 73. Also the two chamber ones are shorter which gives you more room to play. Its a sharp downturn needed comming right out of the muffler, then a sharp turn inward towards the diff. I still had to trim the pipe end of the tip in order to get the correct fit lengthwise. This allowed me to mount the mufflers up high and out of sight. From behind my car you dont see the mufflers hanging down at all. All you see it the square tip. On my 73 I went with the 2.25 id mufflers. This way a short section of 2.25 pipe was used as a coupler to connect the tip to the muffler. The 2.25 od pipe fit perfectly inside the factory tip.
I have the 50 series Delta Flows with 2 1/2 pipes all the way back with an H pipe. It is plenty loud without being to loud and calling every cop in town. I had my 2 inch outlets fixed. They removed the 2 inch pipe leading into it and bored it out to 2 1/2 and welded a short piece of 2 1/2 inch pipe. It looks factory stock and I have 2 1/2 inch all the way through. I would go with at least 2 1/4 pipes. The smaller the pipe the quieter it will be.
