Just received a differential rebuild kit from Tom's and the new side yoke bearings appear to have half the amount of needle bearings. Is this going to be a problem, or should I get some original style bearings? Why would they do this anyway?

That has been a topic of conversation (argument?) on differential rebuild threads in the past. You can try searching for it...
What I remember reading when I rebuilt mine was that--from an engineering standpoint-- the bearings with 1/2 the rollers are perfectly adequate for the job, and one poster claimed they were superior in this application...IIRC, he posted some data from the manufacturer. In terms of real-world experience, I have almost 2 years on my rebuild using the subject bearings...no issues.
