72 corvette with a performance motor 350, but I don't know if it has hydraulic or solid lifters. Is there some way to know for sure without removing the intake manifold?
You can hear solid lifters, nice, rythmic clacking sound kind of a shhhhhhh sound not a tick tick tick. If you pull a valve cover you can check for clearance at the valve to rocker arm interface on the closed valves. Hydraulics will be 0 clearance, preloaded, solids will have measurable clearance, Use a .010 feeler guage as all solids I have seen, even the tight lash cams have at least that much.
I can't get a feeler gauge in between the rocker roller and valve, when a valve is closed. Does that mean for sure they're hydraulic lifters. I've tried adjusting them as hydraulic with the engine on but even tightening all of them down and they're still loud.
However they're so noisy that when I'm trying to adjust with the engine on and valve cover off I can't hear the valve that I'm backing off and tried tightening them all but still ticking loudly.

Here is how it is done. http://www.lbfun.com/warehouse/tech_...ch%20paper.pdf
If you haven't wiped out your lobes or collapsed your lifters from tightening them down to tight this will get you adjusted right. Just tightening them all down is a good way to trash your cam. Adjusting them when running when you can't hear the one your adjusting tick because of the noise is not a good option. I have seen quite a few cams ruined because of improper adjustment. Sounds like it might be too late for yours.
