Default Carb Question?

Hi guys,

I have an issue with the carb on my 72 and was wondering if I could get some advice? I currently have a Rochester on it and though having it rebuilt half a dozen years ago she is leaking and I was wondering (and looked at) a Edelbrock 1405 Performer Series carb and was wondering if it would fit on my manifold? and if so....would it clear the hood? the Q-Jet just barely fits without much to spare...any help would be appreciated.

you would need an adapter. I've never been a fan of Carter's or quadrajets but in this case I'd rebuild the rotten chester

An exact fit to your manifold would be the Holley Spreadbore. I personally think it's a good carb, better than the Q-jet. Some people here will disagree and say all Holley's are junk.

Rebuild your Qjet if you are interested in fuel economy and mileage. If you are interested in performance go for a square bore Holley like a street avenger 670. You would need to get an air gap manifold too though. Stay away from the AFB edelbrock clone carbs JMO.

I have a spread bore holley on my 78. It is slightly taller that the Q-J and required an extra thick air horn gasket so that i was able to use the stock air cleaner. This setup barely fits under the hood. I would like to go back to the Q-j and will someday. I think fuel economy is better and the choke worked better for starts when the engine was still moderately warm.

The Edelbrock will bolt to your current manifold without an adapter plate.
The hood will close using your current air filter.
The only issue might depend on how much drop your current air filter base has.
If the base has a lot of drop to it you will have to buy a banjo fitting for the fuel inlet to route the fuel line upward under the base because the Edelbrocks come with an inlet that stick straight out the side.

My opinion, fix the quadrajet.
