Default Steering feels notched

Just left and right of center my steering feels like it almost snaps into place. There's a little bit of play at center but more right or left and you can actually feel (lightly) and see the steering wheel click into a groove. Any ideas on what that could be? Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "click into a groove", but otherwise it sounds like you might have either bad bearings in the steering column or a bad rag joint. Or both.

The rag joint is the coupler between the steering shaft and the steering box. Look just below the master cylinder and you will see it. Check the rubber disk for cracks or breaks.
If the rag joint looks OK you will need to inspect the steering column more closely.

Have you messed with the steering box adjustment?

the very first thing to check is the rag joint (coupler)... And if that is good then you need reman gearbox.

I agree...If the joint is good the box is probably worn.

It very well could be the steering box, but if I understood the symptoms as he described them it sounded like the issue is probably between the steering box and the steering wheel.
I am hoping that he will find the problem there before having to go through the hassle of removing/rebuilding/replacing the steering box.

Thanks guys. I'll have to take a look at that joint this weekend. I hope it's not the box. Honestly the steering is fine it's just feels a little weird at a certain place.

should be 3 threads showing on the top adjuster for the steering box. Sure it hasn't been overadjusted? That would also give the notchy feeling too.
