I have been trying to figure out what is causing a thumping problem in my 1976 L48 Automatic. It is most noticeable at city speeds and thumps faster as you speed up. Although, sometimes it is fine and there is no noise at all.
I was under the car today (I really need to buy a lift) and I noticed a weight attached to the driveshaft using a zip tie. Needless to say it moves which probably explains by the noise is there sometimes and sometimes not.
Anyway, it seems that I should check the balance on it. Do shops do this on the car or should I take it off and deliver it? Any other recommendations.

you have the drive shaft and yoke balanced at the same time off of the car at a drive line shop.....you need to take them both.....a weight held on by a zip tie is not the way to do it.

While I agree with that statement, I doubt that is the source of his thumping. The very first thing I would check is for a tire that is out of round or separated.
Tires seem fine. I am wondering if the out of balance driveshaft has wrecked one of my u-joints. I noticed that I will have to replace the transmission seal so when I have it out I will check everything.
I am going to call tomorrow to see what this will cost. I wonder if it will be cheaper to buy a new one.
