Have 1970 Corvette convertible - 350/300. Intermittent problem. Car runs normally most of time. When problem occurs (could be after accelleration, but not always) engine begins missing and stops. After couple of minutes car can be restarted - but then misses and stops after short distance. Have had car into mechanic after occurrance, and car runs normally - then repeated a week or so later. Any ideas?
I'd be thinking something is getting hot.. like the coil or condenser/points, but could also be fuel related.. needle valve sticking in the carb flooding it, vapor lock.
Don't know about on the 70, but on my '76, the PO had removed the carb return line and the vapor charcoal canister and I think I was getting a vapor lock when the engine got hot. The car would just die like it ran out of gas and would not restart. After waiting a few minutes, it would crank right up. Someone suggested using a vented gas cap which I did and have never had it die again. Bought a AZ for $5-10 bucks.
There is a wire (should be the cloth covered one) that goes from the starter to the coil. Check the connection to make sure it's not loose, or frayed.
As stated earlier, if your fuel pump does not have a return line, then you could have vapor lock. If you don't have a return line check to make sure the steel fuel line has clearance from the block.
What kind of carb do you have? The problem could be float level related.
