I just got back from Spring Carlisle and saw a Mustang that I really liked, "Yea, yea, yea I know  ". My wife wants a convertible for herself and the kids to be able to ride around in which means a 2nd Corvette is out because no back seat.
I didn't go with the intention to buy anything while there (reason I can't go to motorcycle dealer ;) . Well while walking around I came across a 1988 Black convertible Mustang GT with a 5 speed. This car was in great shape, with a new top and glass back window, new flowmaster exhaust, aftermarket aluminum wheels, etc.... It was great to see such a new body/ undercarriage on it, because I usually see these rusting out at home. This was a car I wanted sooo bad while in highschool, knowing that one day I would get a Corvette just couldn't get that either at the time  .
If I had gone to buy a car, that one would be sitting in my driveway today. I now have a better idea on how to buy a car when going someplace like that so I'll be better prepared next time :D .
Just thought I'd share this with my friends. Are we still friends  :flag ?
I got the feeling that I should pray for a follow forum member and keep him from SIN. :smash:
So I prayed and God has answered my prayers. Another forum member kept from the following the wrong path! Hallaluha!!!! :D  We are still friends. :flag
Mike - If you just have to get a Stang, at least make it something like a 60's Shelby GT. That would be more than forgivable. :D You got it Buddy, still friends. :)
I had a black 1989 Mustang GT. It was fun, it was fast, it got a LOT of attention (EVERYONE wanted to race me!) but the interior royally sucked. The seats were designed for someone like ET's build (long neck or something). And it just felt really cheap compared to my '77 Vette. After I got the Vette, I never drove the Mustang and eventually sold it.
Now if you want a cool car, check out hte latest "Automobile" magazine with an article on the new Mitsubishi Lancer EVO. Available with stick or automatic in the states. 280hp 3000lbs 4 doors, 4wd, 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. Hows that for a family car. :) (and this is BEFORE you tweak the boost up a few more pounds and add a bigger intercooler that the Euro/Japanese models have). Oops, I'm getting carried away now!
If you do want an old Mustang, supposedly the non GT 5.0's are faster (less weight).

Dave, I never even considered a Mustang until I saw that one. I did see a 65 that was pretty nice, but no Shelby's (except maybe the Shelby Cobra that I was drooling over ;) ).
Terry, aside from the body condition, the interior was in really nice shape too. No rips or tears in the seats and the carpet was nice. It sounded great also :) .
Chuck, a Camaro is what she'd really like except that she wants a newer one & I won't buy one if it has a 6 cylinder in it :nono: , must be a V8 if it's a Camaro (my rule) . We want to wait another year before buying, but the stang was do able for the price they were asking. I just need to get it out of my system ;) .
What's wrong with owning a nice mustang? I have a 89 that will probably blow 75 percent or more corvettes away. It has a well built 355 with Trick flow heads, good solid cam, nitrous, roller cage, slicks and great stereo system. It runs low 11's and with descent traction pulls the front end.
Norval thise are all the things I'm thinking when looking at the Mustang. There are so many things that you can get performance wise for the 5.0 . Of course I'm not going to mention that to my wife  , she just wants something to drop the top and cruise around in ;) .
Re: O|T- Almost bought a Mustang ! (Chris@VetteFinders)
I almost bought one 4 months ago when looking for a beater. I was going to get a plate that said "RUSTANG". Now THAT would be fun.

Either that or "MUSTAKE"
Actually, I've been drawn that way from time to time. I was considering a 1988 LX 5.0. The LX 5.0's have the exact same engine, tranny and suspension as the GT, but without all the ground effects crap and nicer tail lights. IMO.
Well, it looks like I'm in good company here then :) . I like the idea of the Rustang plates, I'll have to keep that one in mind if I do find one down the road  .
All this talk about mustangs got me excited so I had to throw in a picture of my 355 in my 89 hatch back. This car is never driven in the rain, all wires run behind the fenders. This is original paint, fiberglass hood and .030 over 351 windsor. The car weights about 3300 lbs and runs low 11's. Gas mileage is excellent, allways starts right up, idles consistantly. All around a nice looking driving car. It shares the shop with my vet and there is no fighting between the two.
Re: O|T- Almost bought a Mustang ! (norvalwilhelm)
Norval that car must fly  ! Those 4 woofers loading against the back window must pound pretty hard too :D . Looks like an all around nice ride :yesnod: .
Smokedtires. It does move. You can dump the clutch at 4700rpm, feel the slick wrinkle, if the traction is good the front rises about 6 inches and you are grabbing 2nd gear, 3rd, 4th and 5th are only a few seconds away. This car hooks with a form of 4 link suspension and 3.73 gears. The stainless rollcage really stiffened the car up along with frame connectors and re-enforced boxed frame. Place a jack anywhere near the back and 3 tires come off the ground. My wife like the vet better because with the roll cage and monster tack she feels out of place in a mustang. The vet had more class at least before that big blower starting sticking out of the hood.
The vet has 3 or 4 hundred more horse power but it sure doesn't hook like the mustang. If I want to embarrase a jerk on the street and he is running street tires I will clear 5 lanes of traffic before he crosses the cross walk. I don't do this often but if he is a jerk he WILL go down badly.
Forgot the stero. It holds about 12 CD's has 14 internal speakers, 2 amps etc, etc. It is all hidden behind the rear seat, fold the seat down and it is right there.
The mustang is running the stock T5 and I do not worry about it. The tremec in the vet has not been tested yet. The vet comes out of storage this weekend. Last summer I ran a mustang T5 without any porblems. I do not power shift. Just clean fast sure shifts.
