Default Motor codes, help me!

Hello everybody, I'm just restoring a C3 I bought used. I know the motor has been replaced 11 years ago and I'm trying to find more info about it. On the left of the water pump I have found a code which is 2M1112 4VP, what does it means?
This is the restored motor! Thank you!

Mostly likely a Mr. Goodwrench or Targetmaster crate motor. I don't know of any means of fully decoding the numbers beyond that.

IronDog,

Check this link about 3/4 the way through. It shows where the numbers and codes are located on the engine and provides charts to decipher.

Don't quote me on this: M is for Mexico. 1112 is the date the engine was assembled. First 2 could be 2002, 1992, 1982, etc.

Nor will anybody else with a crate engine. Look for the casting number and casting date which might narrow down when and where, but Mexico is a safe bet.

This is the "not restored" motor, does this help in order to understand which model/power is it?

I'll say L48. Look at your VIN and give us the 5th character. If it's J, then it's an L48. 195HP.

Hello, the VIN says "J" but it has been told me that as a replacement motor it could be the 250HP version... is it true?

A replacement motor can be whatever the previous owner felt like installing- maybe 150HP- or 550HP. The original engine has no bearing on that.

Most mid 70-80s engine codes start with 3 letters so I think your gonna be looking for a crate engine company. You can try lookin behind the distributor on the bell housing flange and see what numbers where casted in at the factory. That might give you an idea if its a 4 bolt or 2 bolt main block but after that its a crap shoot what is in that engine...

Looking at some codes on the motor I've found 3GM close to the casting number (which is 10066036) and 314 on the other side. Does anybody know what it means? Thanks

Are your "restored" and "not restored" engines the same? On the engine in the pic, there is a pad on the block at the front of the right head in the area beneath the AIR pump. The engine code should be stamped there.

The 10066036 confirms that it's a GM crate engine, first came out in '86. 3GM is the #3 foundry line. Not sure about 314.

Most sources state that this was sold as a ~200 gross HP engine so maybe 160ish net HP.

Yes they are the same engine pictures (restored and not). The engine code is the one I've posted (2M1112 4VP). As the casting number doesn't tell me the number of bots, is there any way to understand how many bolts I've without opening the motor?
