I simply put a dab of silicone where the pin goes thru the backing plate and let it cure over night. With the springs collapsed and tied with dental floss I installed the retainers and cut the floss off....No Problemo!!!

You need some thin needle nose pliers for the side springs. The whole jog is a pain w/the spindle in place. A good tool to make is shown in the link below. Take a flat head screwdriver and put a slot in the middle to grab the upper spring hook. You can push the upper spring to the side and over the hold down bolt and get it hooked into the shoe. Once it's hooked, rotate the spindle so that the PB access hole is over it and put the screwdriver through the hole to push it down.

Well Van, that doesn't really help, because the hub flange covers the entire brake assembly. Can I pull the half-shaft, and slide the hub flange out from the trailing arm?

Not without a press. I just sent one of my guys to my house to get my video camera. I'll take a video with one of my bearing assemblies thats already built and install the PB hardware and shoes with the spindles in. I'll try to get it posted up on youtube by the end of the day and post up the link.

Just did mine and was fighting with it. I will show what I did that worked well.
1. Silicone'd the pin to stay erect. Let cure overnight.
2. Compressed spring and tied off with dental floss.
3. Small dot of hot glue spring to retainer.

4. Marked piece for alignment reasons

5. Hot glued (small drops) above assembly to a nut driver.

6. Through access hole put on and turned 1/4 turn. Assembly easily brakes away from hot glue when it is on and you want it to. Burn dental floss with grill lighter. Hot glue can be easily picked off assembly when done. Worked slick. Just another option and hope it helps someone.

Nope. I didn't. But good point. Maybe someone in the past if it was done at all. Maybe it is an optical illusion with the pic because I fought with it for a while. Stopped, had a beer, and thought about how to overcome the problems I was having.

Same here... the hole in my hub is small ...bigger than 3/8 (which I believe is the size of the rivet shank). ...but not big enough to get the hold down washer thru, that's for sure. From the location of the hole in your hub, it looks like someone really opened up one of original rivet holes.

Just in case anyone is wondering, those rivets are damned beefy. I'm glad I had a LARGE punch and 3 lb hammer. Even so, it took drilling the rivets out substantially, to get them so they'd drift out. I guess after 38 years they got well attached to the hub..

Someone def drilled that rivet hole out. You now have 3 access holes & 4 rivet holes.

That may be the solution to the problem. Like I say, with my method and that modification, it was a simple procedure.
