Default Distributor base timing Advice

I have a 1980 L82 which is stock. I changed the distributor to GM part
no. 1104067 which was the distributor that came with many crate
engines. What should the base timing be set at? Original distributor
calls for 4 degrees.
I have set it at 6 degrees and the car runs very well, more smoothly
than with the original distributor. I did notice that if I floor the
accelerator when going about 45 to 50 mph there is some pinging
initially.
I am not a distributor expert and do not want to tamper with the
mechincal or vacuum advance.

If you installed your own distributor, you can handle the mechanical advance mechanism. You will laugh at how simple it is. Google search for Lars Grimsrud How To Set Timing. That will tell you everything you need to know to get started.

the distributor already has a performance curve, you should be able to set timing to 10 degrees at 800rpm with vacuum disconnected.

What octane gas do you have in the car?

Using regular unleaded. Thanks for the link on the distributor.

You cannt use regular unleaded with that distributor set up, thus your ping. Think premium or toast your engine.
