Mine looks like crap, i am fixng to take it off, must i replace it or does it really matter? right now mines falling apart and is full of dust and other junk...
I think it improves the looks under the hood. It also does insulate the hood paint from engine heat when you shut down. If you do order a new blanket make sure you order the insulation pins that hold it to the hood. The old ones will be shot and stripped by the time you get the washers off. Dr. Rebuild carries the blanket and install kit.
My old hood had no insulation and developed several bubbles after three years. So I used 1/4" thick dense rubber on my new hood. Stuck it on with 3m spray on glue. Looks great, seems to insulate well.
Tis my belief that the General wouldnt have put it there unless he was sure it was needed.......Plus I have seen a few bubbled hoods around too......Got my replacement from Penn-Ohio Corvettes for abt 35 bucks as I recall......
Removed the insulation on my 74 when the car was repainted. I repainted the underside of the hood at the same time. This looks very nice and no paint problems form heat in 4 years. My 72 did not come with insulation, no problems with the paint and heat after 30 years.

I ordered new hardware from Dr. rebuild and purchased the insulation from Home Depot, used the old one as a template and installed shiney side to engine. looks good....... :)
