I had a clunking noise coming out of my '70's rear, everything had been rebuilt. Turned out to be a stuck parking brake shoe that was jumping back and forth when I put it into reverse...the top spring that holds the two shoes in the retracted position had broken. Also the cable itself was seized up so the park brake shoes wouldn't retract even if the spring wasn't broken. To make matters worse the dragging park brake wasn't helping gas mileage much either. I blew everything out with compressed air, replaced the broken spring and put a new cable in, problem solved.
