i have a '80 L48 4spd, i put on a torker intake and 600cfm edelbrock carb, that is all i have done right now, the problem is i have to keep the revs real high when i go from a stop, like over 2000rpms, otherwise the engine backfires and chokes, what can i do to fix this, timming? jets? any ideas...over 2 grand it runs perfect is this because of the intake?
Check the basic stuff 1st, check that all vacuum hoses are conected, Do you have any leakes around your intake manifold, check your timming. Is your carb ok was it new or did you buy used.
Sounds like a vacum leak to me. You can go around the base of the carb and intake with WD-40 (with the tube). Squirt around with the engine running (note you may have to idle it up to keep it running). If you hear the engine RPMs pick up...when you squirt the WD40 on a certain area...that's a source of your vacum leak. Did you replace the carb gasket? Are you sure your intake sealed properly? (I ask because I had a horrendous vacum leak when I put my last intake on a few weeks ago....I posted a topic on it, you may want to check it out...just do a search on me).
The other thing...if its backfiring. Are you sure you got the dist back in correctly...not a tooth off or 180 degrees off...but I doubt you could drive it if it was that off...but it will make it cough and backfire...if the dist is not in properly....there's a paper on http://www.corvettefaq.com by lars on putting in a dist?
