flynhi- If you can't find Chrome, get some stainless bolts. They polish up like chrome. Sand them down with 1800 grit and polish them up. It would be nice to own these hings from Ecklers, but at $229.00
Dan
Don't you have chrome plating places near you? I took all my bonnet (hood) mounting bits and pieces off along with sundry other items and after preparing them as best I could, had them chromed for less than $100.00. As long as you do the preparation yourself, it's a relatively cheap procedure. Certainly nowhere near the price Eckler's want for their pieces. What would you do with a second heap of parts if you bought theirs?
flynhi,
Don't bother with chrome. I learnt 20 years ago that it's a waste of time (bound to get flamed now :D ). The threads rust & sieze & if they are removed often then the chrome on the head can crack. Then the heads rust & the chrome eventually peels.
I've just replaced mine with stainless (5/16" UNC) set screws. Get them polished up & they look as good as chrome & stay looking good. Plus the threads won't sieze up as bad. If you've got access to a lathe then machine the tops & then rub down with wet-or-dry (diminishing grades until 600). Then just get them on a polishing mop. If originality isn't a problem then you can machine a slight taper across the heads to give an "aesthetically pleasing appearance" -
If you get stuck, send me an IM (I'm machining & polishing up so many bolts at the moment that a few more won't be a problem).

Paul in 100% correct. Chrome only looks good for a while, and will eventually crack and peel after being installed/removed a couple of times. You also have to chase the threads with a die to remove the chrome plating from the threads, or run the risk of binding or breaking the bolt. For trailer queens... chrome stays nice, but I'm sure your car is not one of those. I've had the expierence of using high quality chrome bolts on motorcycles... fuget-a-bout-it. Polished stainless is the way to go!!! :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

That makes 2 of us! :) What a waste of time & money it was. The chrome was so thick that I had to use metric spanners on imperial bolts. But only for a while - because pretty soon the chrome had flaked off & the good old imperial spanners fit again  Stainless, it's the best way to go (unless you can afford Titanium!).
flynhi- I buy all my hardware (bolts, nut, etc.) for my business through "High Strength Bolt" in Washington State. They specialize in bolts and hardware. I suppose you have a simular business where you live. If all else fails you can go to Lowe's Hardware any marine supply house.

Just as an example these are SS intake manifold bolts. They look very nice and stay that way. An entire set for my aluminum intake was about $5.00. They do not have the "correct" head markings but that is fine with me. Available at any bulk fastener store.
OK, fellas, I'm gettin the message.
So where do I get Stainless bolts?
Thanks
I was lazy and bought the Arp stainless engine kit from Jegs. $72.00, and comes with bolts for the oil pan, intake manifold, valve covers, headers, fuel pump, waterpump, front cover, thermostat housing, alternator, coil, distibutor brackets and motor mounts. Everything "I" need for my current rebuild, all in one package...delivered to my door. Jegs part # 070-534-9601 sb Chevy. Good Luck!!
The sell chrome grade 5 & polished stainless, hex, socket, button and flat head screws, all kinds of washers & nuts, carriage and bumper bolts and other misc fasteners. They also have engine kits, interior kits, and holley carb bolt kits.
Prices are reasonable, and they have all sizes, metric and inch. The only thing is the address and phone no are 10 years old.
