Default aftermarket steering box

Hello, A friend of mine with a big block 72 coupe tells me there is an aftermarket steering box that gets rid of the antiquated and not very good power steering system that is a direct bolt on to the steering column, and that I should be able to find it in the vette mags adds, well I can't find any information. Does anyone have any in formation about something like that..........Tks...............Troy

What you are looking for is the Borgeson box. It is a new design Delphi 600 unit that is taken apart, the old Jeep mounts are removed, jigged and a plate to fit the C3 is welded onto the box. It is then checked for trueness, aligned if necessary, and the guts installed. You use your pitman arm, but need a new rag joint which they supply. It's a great unit. Here are some links:

In case you haven't figured it out, I love the new steering on my '69 Convertible!

With the Borgeson steering box you also eliminate the control valve and steering ram. That's at least 2 sources of leaks.

I know folks have been pleased with the Borgeson steering box but I went another route with my steering using all the OEM components (none of which leak-BTW after 33 years!) by having the OEM box blueprinted/rebuilt and could not be happier! The steering feel is perfect and original steering slop has been completely eliminated-the cost $300. I still have the OEM steering ratio of 16:1 versus the borgeson 14:1 but I don't need quicker steering for the street and was most interested in eliminating the play in the wheel of which I have none now! I am not talking about a standard rebuild or new OEM box built to original specifications but having the internal components replaced with custom modifications like the olite bushing added to the shaft to eliminate ALL play and hand adjusted for feel. Just an option!

Troy,

That is a great question-I have not driven a borgeson equipped C3 to compare to my custom rebuilt steering box but I can tell you that my 78steers, handles, and feels MUCH better than it ever did when it was new. However, I have also taken great pains to eliminate any unnecessry front suspension movement in addition to the blue printed box (all the other changes were done before the rebuilding of the steering box which I just had done last October 2010) including poly upper and lower control arm bushings, a speed direct spreader bar connecting the upper control arms, poly bushings on the Bilstein shocks, poly mounting and endlink bushings on the OEM 1 1/8 inch front sway bar and 255/45/17 ZR ultra high performance summer only tires. Almost every front end component has been replaced-65,000 miles on the L-82 4 speed. With my setup, I doubt that a borgeson box on a stock front end C3 would feel better steering wise BUT I have no comparison yet. Maybe someone else has experience comparing the 2 options.
