A friend of mine is tearing apart his diff on his 79' for a basic bearing/seal overhaul. However, when we removed the half shafts, we noticed one of the seals was sticking out from the housing (not flush like a seal normally is). Upon further teardown, we saw that the passenger side space for the seal to sit was actually 1/8" deeper than the drivers side. Photos below:

As you can see, theres a significant difference in the space where the seal should sit. Is this normal for a C3 rear?
Whats happened is the yoke has worn down previously and got against the diff case and removed some of the case. Someone then put a new seal in and put it back together.
Its up to your buddy but you can do the same and put in a new seal or replace the case.
This is a common situation on all the C3's when the yokes wear down. Though this probably happened earlier in this rear ends life, you still should check the end play on the yokes for sure. If they check out there would be no problem using this case as long as there is enough material to hold the seal, and by your picture it appears there is enough.
