The main idea of the spreadbore design was to have two small barrels to run on at idle and slow speed, so that emissions and gas mileage was improved. However, to keep the same overall performance on WOT, you needed much larger rear barrels to achieve the same overall airflow.
Simple idea, really.
The Q-Jet also has a great design in that gas is metered by airflow on the rear, something the Holley doesn't do.
