Sorry guys, double post. I meant to put this here but I put in the General section. I'm going to try to delete the other one.
I'm having a hard time diagnosing this one, guys. I have put in a new Summit brand high torque starter (18:1) recently and this is the best it has sounded. My old one was engaging and then disengaging right away and I was told the clutch packs had gone bad. I got the higher torquer for the ZZ4 since it's 10.5:1 and the standards are only rated to 11:1. I tried it first with no shims like my other one and it made a horrible screeching sound. I have tried various combinations of shims and also looked at the teeth on the flexplate to try and figure out if it is too close or too far away.
First, I don't think I should need shims on a crate motor that is less than 3 years old. Second, I have tried 2 shims across, 2 shims outside, 2 shims inside and 4 shims across. It basically sounds the same. It is starting to mellow a little now and sound more normal but I am worried it is just wearing out because nothing has changed. Also, by "mellow a little" I don't mean it sounds right. I disconnected the ignition, check it out:
your right, it don't need shims if its a OE type starter....don't know about how it sounds except if its a whining sound its probably a worn ring gear.....about shims, the more you move the starter away from the ring gear with shims the worse the condition will get.....
